Il-28 kuuluu 1940-luvun lopulla kehitettyihin toisen polven suihkupommikoneisiin ja se oli Suomen ilmavoimissa käytössä maalinhinaus-, kartoituskuvaus- ja meritiedustelukoneena vuosina 1960-1981. Vaikka konetyyppi Suomeen tullessaan oli jo toistakymmentä vuotta vanha, se soveltui näihin tehtäviin käyttöaikanaan ominaisuuksiensa ja varustuksensa puolesta poikkeuksellisen hyvin palvellen luotettavasti koko käyttöiän. Teoksessa kerrotaan koneen taustan hahmottamiseksi myös suihkupommikoneiden yleisistä kehitysvaiheista Neuvostoliitossa ja maailmalla sekä Ilmavoimien käyttämistä Il-28-koneiden edeltäjistä, joista SAAB 17 ja Hunting Percival Pembroke olivat viimeisimmät. The Ilyushin Il-28 was used by the Finnish Air Force for target towing, photo-mapping and sea surveillance in 1960-1981. Although the Il-28 was in 1960 already over ten years old type, it was very suitable for these missions during its serving years in Finland thanks to its qualities and equipment and served reliably all those years. The Il-28 belonged to the jet bomber generation designed and developed in the late 1940s. To understand Il-28’s background this book also describes the development of jet bombers in the world and in the Soviet Union. The aircraft types which preceded the Il-28 in the Finnish Air Force are also presented. Of these the Il-28 replaced the SAAB 17 and Hunting Percival Pembrok
